Got a problem with Viscosity or need help? Ask here!

I was having some problems connecting to my Witopia VPN service, so I decided to reinstall Viscosity. When I click to start the application, nothing seems to happen and the Viscosity icon doesn't appear in the menu bar. Had a look at Console and found the following:
07/03/2010 20:30:44 [0x0-0x13013].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[217] Sun Mar 7 20:30:44 BB-MacBook-Air.local Viscosity[217] <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSUnregisterWindowWithSystemStatusBar: Invalid window 07/03/2010 20:30:44 [0x0-0x13013].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[217] Sun Mar 7 20:30:44 BB-MacBook-Air.local Viscosity[217] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged. 07/03/2010 20:30:45 [0x0-0x13013].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[217] Viscosity could not start OpenVPN with root/admin rights, which means OpenVPN may not be able to start the connection. Trying to continue anyway... 07/03/2010 20:32:46 Viscosity[231] <type 'exceptions.OSError'>: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/Applications/Viscosity.app/Contents/Preconfigure/com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.plist'
Tried repairing permissions and got the same thing. Tried deleting the Viscosity prefs file, same result. Reinstalled Viscosity, same result.
Any ideas?

Hi Buzzard, Try reinstalling Viscosity from the Viscosity website. Your WiTopia connections should be safely stored in your Mac OS X home folder, so they should still be there (assuming you have run WiTopia's copy at least once). You can download Viscosity from: http://www.viscosityvpn.com/download.htmlIf you're still having trouble, you could try repairing the permissions yourself from the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) with a command like so: sudo chmod -R 755 /Applications/Viscosity.app Cheers, James

Many thanks James. Downloading a new copy and reinstalling now results in Viscosity starting up. Unfortunately, it's not making the Witopia VPN connection. I'm getting a constantly spinning globe icon. Here is what console says:
11/03/2010 00:23:37 [0x0-0x13013].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[150] /Applications/Viscosity.app/Contents/Resources/Utilities.py:206: UninitializedDeallocWarning: leaking an uninitialized object of type NSApplication

Any further ideas, James? I'd really like to get my Witopia service working again, and Viscosity is the problem.

Hi Buzzard,
Are there any error messages, warnings, or anything unusual in the OpenVPN log for your connection? You can view the log by opening Viscosity's Details window, and clicking on the Log button (the third button from the left).
Cheers, James

Hi James,
Nothing unusual in the log:
Fri Mar 12 15:24:49 2010: NOTE: the current --script-security setting may allow this configuration to call user-defined scripts Fri Mar 12 15:24:49 2010: LZO compression initialized Fri Mar 12 15:24:49 2010: RESOLVE: NOTE: vpn.iad.witopia.net resolves to 4 addresses, choosing one by random Fri Mar 12 15:24:49 2010: UDPv4 link local: [undef] Fri Mar 12 15:24:49 2010: UDPv4 link remote: 74.115.160.22:1194
That's as far as it gets. I have the same setup running here side by side on another Macbook, and after that last entry above, there is a "peer connection" entry in the log. That peer connection never happens on the Macbook that I am having the problem with, and I just continue to get the spinning icon and it never connects.

James,
Just worked out a fix. I downloaded Witopia's Viscosity uninstaller, ran that, and then downloaded a new Viscosity package from Witopia and installed that, and it works now.
Cheers
