n00b question - no menu bar icon?

Stupid question - trying to use Viscosity for the first time and not getting far!

I start Viscosity for the first time, enter my password, it asks me if I want to import my Tunnelblick settings (which it tells me it does successfully) and then - that's it. No icon ever appears in the menu bar.

Activity monitor shows it's running but I can't control it...anybody got any ideas?

Note Tunnelblick is *not* running.

I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Thanks

Hi smallard,

Viscosity will not display an icon in the dock, however it should display a small icon in your menu bar (top right near the clock). Clicking on this should bring up the Viscosity menu.

If this icon is not appearing, try checking the Console to see if there are any errors or warning. The Console application can be found at /Applications/Utilities/Console.app

Cheers,
James

Hi,

I did as proposed (checked Console to see if there are any errors or warnings...).

The result is:

Code: Select all
30.01.10 13:01:11   Viscosity[360]   <type 'exceptions.ValueError'>: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'unknown'

30.01.10 13:07:18   [0x0-0x29029].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[360]   Sat Jan 30 13:07:18 computername.tld Viscosity[360] <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSUnregisterWindowWithSystemStatusBar: Invalid window

30.01.10 13:07:18   [0x0-0x29029].com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity[360]   Sat Jan 30 13:07:18 computername.tld Viscosity[360] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

30.01.10 13:09:19   Viscosity[242]   <type 'exceptions.ValueError'>: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'unknown'

I'd be greatful for any hints/ideas...

...as in this state, Viscosity does not show up at all and therfore can't be used at all.

Thanks a lot in advance,
André

Hi André,

Well that's certainly a strange one - I'm afraid it's not anything I've seen before. However here are a few generic things you can try:

1. Delete and reinstall Viscosity (i.e. trash the Viscosity application and reinstall it).

2. Make sure you are using the latest version of Viscosity (1.0.9 at the time of writing).

3. Make sure you are using the latest version of Mac OS X (i.e. 10.5.8 or 10.6.2).

4. Try deleting all of Viscosity's preferences/support folders and re-starting Viscosity. To do this, delete the following:
Your Home Directory/Library/Preferences/com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.plist
Your Home Directory/Library/Application Support/Viscosity

5. Make sure the time on your computer is correct (to avoid OpenSSL issues).

6. Try making sure your computer is connected to a network before launching Viscosity.

Cheers,
James
